Inprint Brown Reading Series celebrates 25th anniversary by bringing giants of contemporary literature to Houston: Louise Erdrich, John Updike, and others

 

Celebrating its 25th anniversary—25 years of bringing more than 250 of the world's great writers to Texas—the

2005-2006 season of the Inprint Brown Reading Series features the giants of contemporary literature, including

John Updike, Mary Gordon, Louise Erdrich, and others. Presented by Inprint, in association with the UH

Creative Writing Program, Alley Theatre, and Brazos Bookstore, the season features seven regular season

readings and three family events. Readings take place at the Alley Theatre, 615 Texas Avenue, with the exception

of the April family event. The season begins in September and runs through May; readings are held on Mondays at

7:30 p.m., and family events are on Saturdays at 11 a.m. (doors open 45 minutes before reading). Admission for the

Updike reading is $10. Admission for all other readings is $5, free for students and senior citizens. The family events

This 25th anniversary season features a dynamic line-up of writers, including:

October 17—Bestseller Louise Erdrich with a new novel The Painted Drum

November 14 —Innovative poets Lucie Brock-Broido and Dionisio Martinez

December 6*— Two great novelists Mary Gordon and Patricia Powell, *This reading held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet

January 23*—Esteemed British novelist Julian Barnes and bestelling American writer Jay McInerney read from their new novels Arthur and George and The Good Life *Please note that Julian Barnes was originally scheduled to read with Gish Jen, who had to withdraw from the Series for personal reasons. McInerney will read in her place.

February 27*—Pulitzer Prize winning literary icon John Updike *Pleas note, ALL seats $10, available only at the door on the evening of the reading

March 27—Pulitzer Prize winning poets Louise Glück and Franz Wright

April 24—Honoring the 25th anniversary of the series, readings by the UH Creative Writing Program Faculty

Aprill 22*—Young adult writer Lois Lowry and Houston First Lady Andrea White *Please note that this reading will be held at Cullen Theater at Wortham Center

May 6—Cinco de Mayo para Niños with Diane Gonzales Bertrand and John & Juan

believes that a great nation deserves great art." Inprint also receives in-kind support from the Alley Theatre,
